BOOKS FOR LEARNING JAZZ IMPROVISATION
The chord progressions on these are great for a beginner. The chords are basic and do not change too frequently so there is time to think which notes to use. They also repeat a number of times so you can improve on each time through. It comes with a disc so you have the backing while you improvise.

This and volume 1 are two that give lots of information and ideas for improvisings, not just tunes to practice on. I would buy this with the maiden voyage and use the ideas in this to practice the easy chord progressions to the tunes in the other book.

This book I had first and found it a nice book with simple explanations and examples to try, such as different 12 bar blues.

FIRST PIANO BOOKS
This is a very simple book for young learners. My sons learnt with this and found it easy to follow.

I found this to be a good series of books either as a progression from the John Thompson books or for an older child or adult to start on, especially if they can already read basic sheet music. I could already play a brass instrument and read in treble clef only and was able as an adult to start on these. They were also used by my husband as a child as a second series of books after starting on something simpler.
