TEMPO
Tempo means simply the speed at which a piece of music is played.
Above is an example of tempo written as beats per minute. The note indicates the type of note and the number the amount of them. So since it is a crotchet and the number is 120 then the music should be played at a speed of 120 crotchet beats per minute, or two beats per second.
Sometimes tempo is not indicated this way but is described by use of a word - usually italian, e.g. allegro for fast. Please see the section on Musical Vocabulary for more information.
